Lent 2021: Fast, Read, Pray, Act.

For thousands of years Christians have prepared for Resurrection Sunday through a 40 day Lenten journey. The Lent season is filled with spiritual practices to prepare the believer for the celebration of the Resurrection. This year the combined church group (Crown Hill, Martins, Wooster, Salem, Oak Grove & Orrville) is joining together with a 40 day “I Was a Stranger” Bible reading plan that was produced by the Evangelical Immigration Table.
While immigration is certainly a political, social and economic issue, it’s also a biblical issue. For Christians whose highest authority is God’s word, our views should be formed by what the Bible says. But research suggests that many Christians have never thought about immigration issues from the perspective of the Scriptures.
The “I Was a Stranger” Challenge is a 40-day Scripture-reading guide composed of short Bible passages that relate in one way or another to the theme of immigration. The challenge is simple: would you commit to reading one verse each day over Lent and to prayerfully asking God to give you His heart?
You may wonder, “Why are we focusing on immigration during Lent? Isn’t Lent usually a time of fasting?” The answer is YES! Lent is about fasting. However, as we discerned about doing a Lenten fast together the words of Isaiah 58:6-7 convicted us:
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?”
This Lent we want to fast, read, pray and act in line with the type of fast the Lord has chosen. Throughout Lent we will offer zoom calls where we will hear from Christian leaders and modern day prophets about immigration. They will offer up tangible and practical ways we can live out the type of fast described in Isaiah 58.
We look forward to journeying through Lent together and seeing how God will lead us! Feel free to invite others to join us! Share the “I Was a Stranger” Bible reading plan with friends and family and invite them to join the zoom calls!
